The FF Plus will be submitting a complaint to the police in which it is asked that an investigation is launched into the possible involvement of South African government members and sport officials in fraud committed in the bid process for the previous soccer world cup which South Africa hosted.

Adv. Anton Alberts, the FF Plus’ parliamentary spokesperson on sport says the complaint will be laid this afternoon at half past three (15:30) at the Garsfontein police office in Pretoria.

The allegations, as contained in the indictment that the American FBI had drawn up, will form the basis of the complaint. The police will be requested to investigate in particular, the role of the ministry of sport and all persons who was part of the bid process.

Adv. Alberts emphasised that the audit which was done into South Africa’s financial affairs with regards to the soccer world cup was not a forensic audit and said it would therefore be unsuitable for the minister of sport, Fikile Mbalula, to state it as a fact that there had been no irregularities on the side of South Africa.

From the FBI’s indictment is appears that the money was not paid from South Africa, but that it had been part of the Fifa funds that should have been paid to South Africa and which was then channelled to the conspirators. A forensic audit, which delves much deeper and specifically searches for irregularities, would be able to determine the truth of this.

“We all know what happened with the arms deal scandal. Fraud and corruption was committed which was so well hidden that a judge had to be appointed years later to discover the truth and we still do not know what it really is.

“The positive here, s that South African authorities alone aren’t involved and those irregularities which will be revealed by the FBI will be difficult to deny or hide away,” Adv. Alberts said.
