South Africa would increase the levy on nonrenewable electricity sources by 1c/kWh to 3.5c/kWh, from July 1, 2012, Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan said on Wednesday.

He pointed out, however, that there would be little overall impact on electricity prices.

The increased revenue would be used to fund energy-efficiency initiatives such as the solar water heater programme. The levy would replace the current funding mechanism, which was incorporated into State-owned power utility Eskom’s yearly tariff application, and would enhance transparency and enable government to use alternative agencies to deliver the energy-efficiency initiatives.

Meanwhile, the general fuel levy on petrol and diesel and for the Road Accident Fund would increase by 20c/l and 8c/l respectively from April 4. The taxes would now equal 26.9% of the pump price for 93 Octane petrol and 26.7% for diesel.
