Ekurhuleni Local Municipality pays GS Security about R200 000 per month, despite its failure to monitor and safeguard Mooifontein Cemetery in Ekurhuleni.

There is a viral video depicting people living on top of some tombstones in Mooifontein cemetery in Ekurhuleni, which clearly shows that the security company has been sleeping on the job.

This information was revealed by the Gauteng MEC for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (COGTA), Mzi Khumalo, in an oral reply to the Democratic Alliance’s (DA) questions in the Gauteng Provincial Legislature (GPL). The questions were submitted following an oversight inspection, which uncovered the deplorable condition of the cemetery.

It is disheartening to learn that the security company responsible for protecting the cemetery, the final resting place of many loved ones of the people of Kempton Park and Tembisa, has failed to live up to their duties despite being paid a significant amount of money.

The DA has urged MEC Khumalo to ensure that Ekurhuleni Municipality plays its part in ensuring that the contracted service provider performs its job, and that the dignity of loved ones' last resting places is maintained and preserved.

A DA government will take immediate action to rectify the situation and ensure that all cemeteries are well-maintained and protected from invaders.
