The new higher education curriculum should be based on a Karl Marx theory, Education minister Kader Asmal told a conference in Pretoria on Thursday.

In his opening address, Asmal quoted: "The partially developed individual, who is merely the bearer of one specialised social function, must be replaced by the totally developed individual."

Delegates at the University of Pretoria have been tasked with reviewing the curriculum on higher education. Asmal offered a few pointers and tips on where to find inspiration for the task.

"The policy on discourse in higher education in recent years has been characterised by a focus on the key themes of access, equity, size and shape, funding and governance. We have not focused the same attentions on curriculum," Asmal told the conference.

In a written speech, he said part of the difficulty in addressing curriculum issues arose from the diverse way in which the concept was understood.

"What is our strategic objective," he asked, and said it was to produce graduates who were well rounded and thoroughly grounded, who were skilled, competent, creative, flexible and adaptive to new challenges.

He said higher learning facilities were also to produce people who were "adept in critical thinking and cultural literacy. Who were enabled to participate fully in their economy, society and their globalising world." - Sapa.
