On November 19, 2011, leaders of the 18 nations that comprise the East Asia Summit (EAS) met in Bali, Indonesia, to discuss a broad array of political, security, and economic issues. Membership was recently expanded to 18 countries including the United States and Russia at the Sixth EAS in 2011. EAS meetings are typically held after annual Association of Southeast Asian Nations ASEAN leaders’ meetings. The EAS was established as an ASEAN-led development, with the summit to linked to ASEAN summit meetings. The decision to implement the EAS was reached during the 2004 ASEAN Plus Summit.
