Title: Dowry: Youth Day celebrations
Extracts from a speech by Cobus Dowry, Western Cape Minister of Agriculture at Youth Day Celebrations, Elsenburg
A CAREER IN AGRICULTURE
You as youth have an important role to play in promoting the values contained in our Constitution. They include respect for democracy, non-racialism, non-sexism, human dignity, an open society, the rule of law, reconciliation and accountability.
Today I want to invite you – if you are prepared to work, and if you are prepared to dream; there are new unlimited opportunities within your grasp.
The Department of Agriculture here at Elsenburg is the leader in many fields in agriculture in the country and we provide a wide variety of career paths that could be followed. We have six mainstream activities or programs that are aimed at improving and developing agriculture and they are, Sustainable Resource Management; Farmer Support and Development; Veterinary Services Technology; Research and Development; Agricultural Economics and Structured Agricultural Training. We also have a Finance and Human Resource Section. Each of these programmes have various sub-programmes which can offer careers from administration staff to highly qualified researchers, economists, veterinarians, plant technicians and even lecturers at the Cape Institute for Agricultural Training.
You can become masters of your own destiny if you become activists of hope. Become involved in your community and its activities. Too many people are passive and blame others for their woes. Your generation will be the politicians, even ministers and presidents of the future and I am not ruling out the possibility that we might have a female president one day. You will become the ambassadors, the business leaders, and the religious leaders of the future. But in order for that to happen I want to plead with you to become activists of hope and to become involved. You owe it to yourself!
The youth is the majority in this country. The future is yours.
