Title: Dowry: Western Cape authorities asked to extend hours for licence conversions
STATEMENT BY COBUS DOWRY MINISTER OF LOCAL GOVERNMENT: MUNICIPALITIES IN THE WESTERN CAPE REQUESTED TO EXTEND WORKING HOURS TO ACCOMMODATE LATE LICENCE APPLICANTS
I have been in contact through my office with municipalities in the Western Cape where problems have occurred with long queues.
Particularly the City of Cape Town experiences the biggest problem and although there is no excuse for drivers not having obtained the new format licence as enough time and warning were given, I am of the opinion that municipalities should assist in addressing the problem.
Particularly the City of Cape Town will now extend the working hours of their traffic department. (Time of extension: Thursday, 27 February, and Friday, 28 February, from 07:00 to 17:00, including the last person in the queue at 17:00) The City of Cape Town must therefore be thanked for their willingness to assist those standing in queues. A similar request is made to municipalities with the same problem.
In the meantime the national Minister of Transport will be requested to issue a directive to the provincial minister of transport to allow municipalities for an extension beyond Friday, 28 February 2003.
