BRINGING FOOD TO THE TABLE OF THE HOME FOR ALL
Mr Speaker
Honourable Premier

At the onset I would like to thank my Heavenly Father for the great opportunity and the privilege to serve the people of the Western Cape, through agriculture. I am committed to create a Home for all in the Western Cape in this portfolio.
Allow me to quote from James 5:7 "Behold, the farmer waits for the precious fruit of the earth, being patient over it until it receives the early and the late rain."
It is a proud moment for me to stand here to deliver the Agriculture vote for the Western Cape. I grew up as the son of a farm worker and I started my career as a farm worker. I still have those memories of the first rain on dry soil, freshly picked grapes, and newly ploughed soil.
Every person and organisation involved in agriculture in the Western Cape has reason to be proud of what our province has achieved since 1994. By every measure there has been improvement, growth, development and the creation of a positive new approach that forms the basis for long-term success in the agricultural sector. It is this approach - of partnership - that is directly responsible for the gains that we have made over the last ten years.
This government believes that agriculture is one of the most important growth sectors in the economy of the Western Cape - holding the key to real job creation across the province. We know though, that Government alone can never create growth and empowerment. Western Cape agriculture depends largely on all of its different social partners - government at all levels, organised agriculture, and organised labour. This golden thread of partnership will be the basis of our Government's approach and will no doubt be a firm foundation for the vision of the Premier, namely to build a home for all.
Agriculture holds the key to the fight against poverty. That is why our Department must become an agent in the process of delivery and that is why, since I have been sworn in as Minister of Agriculture, I have met with almost every official in my department, I have met with organised agriculture, Agri Wes-Kaap, Weskaap Ubuntu Farmers Union (WEKUFU) NAFU the National African Farmers Union and AGRIWASA the organisation representing farm workers in the Western Cape. From every individual and from every organisation I received the necessary support and everyone is equally committed to the important tasks ahead of us.
Over the past few years this province has concentrated on being a world-class province * and rightly so. We are truly a leader in many areas * no less so on the agricultural front. However, the time has come for government to passionately focus on the citizens of this wonderful province who makes us the best province to live in. For this reason I honour the vision of creating a HOME FOR ALL.
