Title: Dowry: Task team investigating alleged mass grave in Laingsburg, 28 Feb

STATEMENT BY COBUS DOWRY, MINISTER OF LOCAL GOVERNMENT AND CONVENOR OF THE TASK TEAM TO INVESTIGATE ALLEGATIONS OF A MASS GRAVE IN LAINGSBURG: TASK TEAM TO VISIT LAINGSBURG ON FRIDAY, 28 FEBRUARY 2003 - PEOPLE WITH INFORMATION INVITED TO SHARE THEIR STORY

People with information on the existence of an alleged mass grave in which victims of the 1981 flood in Laingsburg were buried, are invited to share their story with the task team on Friday in Laingsburg. The task team will be at the municipal offices in Laingsburg from 10:00 to 19:00. In advertisements in various newspapers and community newspapers, pamphlets that were distributed in Laingsburg, and posters, people are also requested to share possible information.

The task team is convened by myself as line-function Minister and consists of Mr Marius Fransman, Minister of Social Services and Poverty Alleviation, Rev James Buys, Moderator of the Verenigende Gereformeerde Kerk, and officials from the Provincial Departments of Local Government, Legal Services, Environmental Affairs and Development Planning.

It is the brief of this task team to gather all possible facts and information on the alleged mass grave, which will be submitted to the provincial Cabinet on 12 March 2003 to enable Cabinet to make an informed decision.

Already we have had some response from the advertisements and we want to give people the assurance that the Constitution of South Africa guarantees freedom of expression - therefore all statements will be treated with the necessary confidentiality. Anyone with information can contact Mr Henry Arendse from the Department of Local Government at (021) 483-4365 or 082-579-9957.

The Provincial Government of the Western Cape places a high premium on the dignity of individuals and communities and it is necessary to investigate such allegations to ensure finality to the 1981 flood disaster.
