The Minister of Transport, Dr Blade Nzimande, appeals to all motorist to be circumspect when using the South Africa roads during this long weekend, which started yesterday, 27th April 2018 to the 01st May 2018.

This weekend also comes during month end April and coincide with two of the most important holiday days in the history of South Africa since the advent of democracy - the Freedom Day and the workers day.

Since the beginning of this long weekend, South Africa has seen an increase in the number of people travelling to various destinations, nationally and internationally.

Minister Nzimande has indicated the traffic law enforcement officers to conducted more roadblocks throughout the country as it happened during the Easter weekend. This visibility is part of the

Department of Transport heightened 365 days road safety programme. “Of particular interest our law enforcement operations will target enforcement of legislation of wearing seatbelts, using cell phones while driving, un-roadworthy vehicles, whilst they continue to clamp down on drunken driving, excessive speed and other moving violations”, said Minister Nzimande.

As part of this lightened programme, Minister Nzimande together with the MEC for Transport and Safety in the Eastern Cape, Ms Weziwe Tikana, will join various road safety activations on Monday, 30 April 2018, in Port Elizabeth - Eastern Cape.

“I take this opportunity to convey my heartfelt condolences to the families who lost their loved ones on our roads and I wish all those who are recuperating in hospitals and home a speedy recovery, Minister Nzimande said.
