Government commends the swift action of the South African Police Service (SAPS) and members of the Alexandra community who assisted the police to arrest three suspects who are allegedly linked to the murder of Mozambican national Emmanuel Sithole. The police are still looking for the fourth suspect.

The events of the stabbing were captured by a Sunday Times photographer James Oatway who was on an assignment on Saturday.

Acting Cabinet Spokesperson Phumla Williams said: “The police should be commended for their swift action following a tip-off by members of the community. The suspects are due to appear in court, and we call for the wheels of justice to turn. The police have also apprehended more than 300 people involved in attacks against foreign nationals. Government appeals to all communities to continue working with law enforcement agencies to ensure that the perpetrators of this heinous crime are brought to book.”

Government also thanks the churches and religious leaders that have heeded President Jacob Zuma’s call to pray for peace and friendship. Likewise, government also thanks members of communities that have stood their ground against the attacks on foreign nationals and encourages South Africans to promote living in peace and harmony.

Williams added: “South Africans and civil society organisations are encouraged to partner with government in creating a safer and healthier environment for our communities to thrive. It is the responsibility of every community in South Africa, to work together with government, towards social cohesion and nation building.”
