Dlamini-Zuma who is currently in Greece attending the International Union of Socialist Youth (IUSY) festival leaves tomorrow for the AAC to return on Wednesday. This year’s Asia-Africa Sub-Regional Organisations Conference (Aasroc) - which forms part of the AAC - follows President Thabo Mbeki's visit to Phnom Penh, Cambodia, last year, during which he addressed the eighth Summit of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean) on the New Partnership for Africa’s Development (Nepad).
Nepad is the socio-recovery blueprint of the African Union (AU).
Aasroc 2003 is the initiative of President Megawati Soekarnoputri of Indonesia and will be co-hosted by Indonesia and South Africa.
Foreign affairs department spokesperson Ronnie Mamoepa said the summit would commemorate the 48th anniversary of the AAC in Bandung - a defining moment in the struggle against colonialism and racial inequality. It is the first of three conferences of its kind, and will culminate in Aasroc 2005 in Bandung to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Asia-Africa Conference.
In his address to the Asean in November 2002, President Mbeki called for the re-kindling of the spirit of Bandung of 1955, which led to close co-operation between Africa and Asia in the international arena that also led to the formation of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM).
African Regional Economic Communities and Asian sub-regional organisations will attend the conference together with representatives from the AU and the Nepad secretariat. – BuaNews.
