ign Affairs Minister Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma left for Botswana's
capital Gaborone on Sunday to attend a Southern African Development
Community's (SADC) meeting.
Dlamini-Zuma is leading a South African delegation to a two-day
SADC Council of Ministers meeting that started yesterday.
The Council of Ministers is expected to deliberate on the outcomes
of the recent African Union (AU) Summit held in Libya including
progress in the implementation of Nepad and the attainment of the
Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).
The meeting will also discuss the position of the SADC Foreign
Ministers on veto rights for new United Nations Security Council
members in terms of UN reform.
According to foreign affairs spokesperson Ronnie Mamoepa, the
status of relations with international co-operating partners
including the European Union, the World Bank, India through the
SADC-India Forum, the Association of Southeast Asian Nations
(ASEAN) and the Gulf Co-operation Council will also be talked
about.
In reviewing the regional situation, the SADC Ministers will look
at economic and social factors; agriculture and food security;
issues of gender; and HIV and AIDS.
Other issues include activities of the SADC Integrated Committee of
Ministers, the SADC Development Fund; the Southern African Power
Pool; and the SADC Housing Policy. The recommendations made by the
gathering will be given to the two-day Heads of State and
Government Summit that starts in Gaborone on Wednesday.
President Thabo Mbeki is expected to leave today, to attend this
