Title: N Dlamini Zuma: 59th session of UN General Assembly

STATEMENT BY MINISTER OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS, DR DLAMINI ZUMA: SOUTH AFRICA - READY TO SERVE THE PEOPLES OF THE WORLD, 24 September 2004

During the course of the current 59th Session of the United Nations General Assembly, a number of countries have correctly called for the speedy finalisation of the discussion to restructure the United Nations Security Council.

In this context, many African countries and others outside our Continent have inquired about the willingness of South Africa to serve as a Permanent Member of the restructured United Nations Security Council.

On behalf of our Government, I would like to confirm that South Africa is ready to assume this responsibility.

Our Government and People fully understand the immense responsibilities that would attach to this high position.

We are ready to respond to this challenge, fully sensitive to the need to respect the interests and aspirations of all countries and peoples, and the imperative to build an equitable and humane global order.
