Speaking at a media briefing in South Africa on Friday, the current Rwandan Finance Minister due to take over as the bank's President in September, said he wanted the bank to increase its level of intervention by delivering the required resources in an effort to assist Africa attain the Millennium Development Goals (MDG).
Kaberuka is in the country on a courtesy visit to President Thabo Mbeki and Finance Minister Trevor Manuel.
"A lot is happening on the ground, our challenge is to deliver the results. Africa is improving on good governance, stability and it is capable to respond," said Mr Kaberuka.
He said the bank had over $7-billion to disburse on loans within the continent. However, the concern was to make the bank more effective throughout Africa.
"The challenge for Africa is that in the next ten years, it must attain a real Growth Development Product of seven percent minimum on sustainable bases. I am aware economic growth itself is not enough, we will have to invest in the continent," he said.
He said it was important to improve quality of aid to change the lives of the needy people. He added that he wanted the bank to be a point of reference as it was active in Africa.
Commenting about his new job, Kaberuka said he was proud that the governors had confidence in him though he came from a small country engulfed with conflicts that saw a million people killed over a period of three months.
He said the cancellation of Rwanda's debt by the G8 would attract more investment in the country that was re-building itself from the civil war eleven years ago.
Though Rwanda is not part of the Southern African Development Community (SADC), Kaberuka attended the meeting of SADC finance ministers.
"Rwanda is not part of SADC but we exchange ideas and as the ADB President I need to understand issues of different regions.
"What happens to SADC is important to Africa. I will do my best to support efforts by SADC to bring development to their region," he said.
He said regional integration was important to bring development. - BuaNews
