The deregistration is in line with the provisions of the amendments to the Labour Relations Act which came into force last year and which were agreed to by all social partners at Nedlac.
One of the purposes of this legislation was to make sure that organisations are held accountable to the department and their membership.
Since 1994 there has been a plethora of bogus trade unions, which threatened to destabilise the labour movement in South Africa.
The deregistration which is commended by Cosatu, is aimed at sustaining an accountable, responsible and stable labour movement in South Africa, The federation has emphasised that none of its 19 trade unions has been deregistered.
Cosatu Acting soesperson Patrick Craven says, “the congress has reiterated the department’s clarity on the deregistration of the South African Clothing and Textile Workers Union (Sactwu), which should not be confused with the one affiliated to the federation with a similar name”.
