The dialogue Deepening Democracy: Public Participation and the Experience of Communities looked at the challenges facing effective public participation in government structures in South Africa, as well as strategies to overcome them. Keynote speakers shared their experiences dealing with local and provincial structures and ideas on how these processes were hindered by policy and lack of transparency.

The main topics of discussion revolved around the notion of active citizenry, the structure of ward councils and committees, capacity building in communities, the importance of leadership and political will and the need to re-open the discussion around constituency representation.

Discussion presented by The Goedgedacht Forum for Social Reflection
