The Democratic Alliance (DA) marched toward Grahamstown High court today to support the application by Eastern Cape schools and their representatives. We support the call for all outstanding teacher posts to be filled and 2013 post allocations to be finalized.
This case is about more than these 35 schools. This is about over 5000 schools that rely on government to fulfil its obligations toward schoolchildren.
We were marching in solidarity with all schoolchildren in the Eastern Cape who do not have access to enough teaching time.
Learning cannot take place when there is an absence of teachers in our classrooms.
The right to education means that children need teachers to teach them.
Both the Education Department and SADTU in the Eastern Cape must take note of this case.
Filling teaching posts is meant to guarantee an acceptable amount of teaching time for children to receive an education.
The same principle applies when teachers are employed but are unreasonably absent from the classroom.
Our message today is clear: quality education for all begins with a teacher in the classroom.
