Democratic Alliance leader Helen Zille said on Monday there was "sufficient evidence" on the so-called spy tapes for a review application of the decision to withdraw corruption charges against President Jacob Zuma.

Zille said she had read the transcripts of the tapes handed to the party by the National Prosecuting Authority last Thursday. They constitute recordings of 36 conversations over 5 months.

She said that without revealing the contents, she was satisfied that the 'spy tapes' provided sufficient evidence to continue the DA’s review application of the decision by the then acting National Director of Public Prosecutions Mokotedi Mpshe to withdraw the charges against President Zuma.

However, the DA has been advised by its lawyers not to make the content public.

The Pentagon has confirmed that Ahmed Abdi Godane, a leader of the al Shabaab Islamist group, was killed in a US airstrike in Somalia last week, calling it a "major symbolic and operational loss" for the al Qaeda-affiliated militants.

Since taking charge of al Shabaab in 2008, Godane had restyled the group as a global player in the al Qaeda network, carrying out bombings and suicide attacks in Somalia and elsewhere in the region, including the September 21, 2013, attack on the Westgate shopping mall in Nairobi, Kenya, that killed 67 people.

Godane publicly claimed responsibility for the Westgate attack, saying it was revenge for Kenyan and Western involvement in Somalia and noting its proximity to the anniversary of the September 11, 2001, attacks on the US.

South African electricity utility Eskom said on Friday that it would sign a disputed R4.3-billion contract with Areva, of France, for the replacement of six steam generators at the Koeberg nuclear power station, in Cape Town.

However, the potential for legal action remained, with Westinghouse Electric Company, the losing bidder, obtaining an order in the Gauteng Local Division of the High Court on Friday obliging Eskom to supply it with documents outlining the basis for Eskom's procurement decision.

Eskom had five calendar days to hand over the documents and the order also outlined a mechanism for dealing with information that could be deemed either commercially sensitive or confidential.
