Making headlines: Ramaphosa suspends Sars boss Moyane, Mabuza faces first questions as deputy president in National Assembly And, De Lille is hell-bent on clearing her name
Ramaphosa suspends Sars boss Moyane
South African Revenue Service Commissioner Tom Moyane was suspended yesterday, with immediate effect, the Presidency said.
President Cyril Ramaphosa has informed Moyane of his suspension with immediate effect pending the institution of disciplinary proceedings.
In a letter to Moyane, President Ramaphosa said developments at Sars under his leadership had resulted in the deterioration of public confidence in the institution and in public finances being compromised.
National Treasury has confirmed that Mark Kingon has been appointed as the acting Sars commissioner.
The DA has welcomed the suspension and also demanded a full investigation of the revenue service under Moyane's leadership.
Mabuza faces first questions as deputy president in National Assembly
Social cohesion, moral regeneration and radical economic transformation will be the topics of discussion when deputy president David Mabuza faces his first question session with MPs in the National Assembly today.
ANC MP Thomas Makondo will ask Mabuza what has been his finding with regard to violence against women and its effect on their ability to participate actively in the mainstream economy in light of his social cohesion responsibilities.
The DA chief whip John Steenhuisen will ask whether Mabuza has engaged any organised segments of society in pursuit of his responsibility as a champion of moral regeneration initiatives since he was sworn in as deputy president on February 27.
The sitting is scheduled to start at 2pm and the MP who asked the original question gets to ask a follow-up question, after which three more MPs get an opportunity to quiz the deputy president with one question each.
De Lille is hell-bent on clearing her name
City of Cape Town Mayor Patricia de Lille says she is resolute, determined and hell-bent on clearing her name ahead of her fight-back against charges levelled against her by the DA.
Disciplinary proceedings are expected to commence today after she was charged with contravening the federal constitution of the party amid claims of misconduct.
De Lille said she was not going to attend the hearing on Human Rights Day.
She said the DA had trampled on people’s rights.
