Parliament's officers to clarify 'misunderstandings' with Zondo

Parliament's presiding officers, National Assembly Speaker Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula and National Council of Provinces chairperson Amos Masondo will meet with Chief Justice Raymond Zondo at Constitution Hill this afternoon "to address matters of concern between the judiciary and the legislature".

The meeting follows concerns raised by the chief justice regarding the institution's implementation of the Judicial Commission [of Inquiry] into State Capture recommendations on Corruption and Fraud in the Public Sector, Including Organs of State.

The legislature's presiding officers requested an urgent meeting with Zondo to "clarify any potential misunderstandings and to establish a common understanding of the respective roles and responsibilities of each arm of government within the context of Parliament's implementation of the commission's recommendations".

On Thursday, the presiding officers will brief the media on the "progress" made in executing the Zondo commission's recommendations.

Spokesperson says Ramaphosa deeply motivated with leading economic reforms

Presidential spokesperson Vincent Magwenya today rejected the narrative that President Cyril Ramaphosa is not engaged with his job, saying the President remains deeply motivated with leading reforms and resolving the many challenges facing the country, particularly those facing the economy.

Magwenya was briefing the media on the President's weekly agenda, where he explained that the Presidency had noted with concern the ongoing narrative that sought to suggest that the President was not fully engaged with his job and the task of leading South Africa.

Magwenya said the Presidency rejected this impression, and called it cheap political point-scoring and an attempt to distract from the difficult task of reforming the economy.

He noted that over the last six months Ramaphosa had focused on resolving multiple challenges and advancing the economic growth agenda.

And, DA to lay complaint against Mashatile with Public Protector

Democratic Alliance national spokesperson Solly Malatsi announced today that his party will be laying a State capture complaint with the Office of the Public Protector against Deputy President Paul Mashatile.

This follows a recent expose which suggested that Mashatile has benefitted from government tenders and has links to the corruption-accused businessman Edwin Sodi.

The DA says laying the complaint with the Public Protector is crucial and has urged all South Africans to join them in “safeguarding the integrity of our democracy and protecting the interests of the people”.

Malatsi expressed concern that the recent revelations against Mashatile were surfacing less than 18 months since the conclusion of the Zondo Commission into State Capture, which had impacted the country’s economy.

The State capture recommendations are yet to be acted on by the South African authorities.
