The DA was expected to picket outside Parliament today against the dismissal of four journalists by the SABC.

DA national spokesperson Phumzile Van Damme said her party was appalled at the firing of four of the journalists – Jacques Steenkamp, Krivani Pillay, Foeta Krige and Suna Venter.

The DA initially planned a picket calling on the ANC’s chief whip Jackson Mthembu to support its call for an urgent meeting of the Portfolio Committee on Communications to consider the ongoing crisis at the SABC.

The African Union Commission chairperson Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma said yesterday that her prolonged stay in Addis Ababa would not affect her possible campaign for the ANC presidency.

She was due to finish her term in Addis Ababa in October, but AU leaders meeting at the AU summit in Kigali, Rwanda, were unable to agree on a replacement.

Dlamini-Zuma was asked to stay on until January when new elections would be held at the next AU summit in Addis Ababa for the chair and all the other members of the AU Commission.

It was not an honour to host the 21st international AIDS conference, because HIV should have been eliminated by now, said actress Charlize Theron at the opening of the AIDS conference in Durban last night.

Theron said she was sad to be at the 21st international AIDS conference and appealed to delegates to “connect with young people” because with the right support they would end the epidemic.

Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa said it was fitting that the conference was opening on Nelson Mandela Day, which was dedicated to service and the betterment of the human condition.

Also making headlines:

A lawyer said the four SABC journalists were fired because they approached the labour court.

And, Maimane said the DA chose the right candidate in Mashaba.
