Madonsela disappointed her deputy did not make the cut

And, Gordhan speaks out on patronage, corruption

Civil society and a church delegation intend holding a vigil outside the Hawks offices in Pretoria today, in support of Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan and two former South African Revenue Service officials.

On Monday, the Hawks sent Gordhan a letter, demanding that he present himself to a Brigadier Xaba at 2pm to give a warning statement.

Gordhan yesterday said he would not do so.

Section27 activist Mark Heywood said he was planning to join the gathering to monitor what was going on, what the charges were and what the Hawks did.

Public Protector Thuli Madonsela was disappointed when her deputy Kevin Malunga failed to make the cut as her successor, she told journalists yesterday.

Madonsela said she was confident Malunga was not corruptible.

She said she hoped that Parliament would appoint an independent person who had not just worked in public service.

Hours after Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan revealed the charges the Hawks were seeking to bring against him, he said politics, power and rent-seeking went together and South Africa needed to reform the system of patronage.

Gordhan was speaking during the second Rumble in the Jungle in Cape Town where he said South Africa needed to keep enough of a spotlight on it and ensure we remained honest.

He received a standing ovation by the Cape Town business community, who saw him as South Africa’s hope of avoiding a credit downgrade to junk status.
