The IEC said it received 28 complaints relating to alleged violations of the electoral code of conduct, with one ward candidate being disqualified.

IEC CEO Mosotho Moepya said of these, 20 had so far been resolved through a legal process, mediation and a few have been closed and withdrawn due to lack of evidence.

He said one case was referred to the Electoral Court which on Friday disqualified a ward candidate for Ward 7 in Tshwane. Votes cast for this candidate will not count.

The Democratic Alliance says coalitions will only be considered as a last option after the results have been tallied. The party intends to win municipalities from the get go, said party spokesperson Phumzile Van Damme.

She said the DA had planned on winning an outright majority to ensure it did not have to consider coalitions

She added that it was encouraging to see South Africans not falling for the race card being played by other parties in their campaigns.

The ANC's Nelson Mandela Bay mayoral candidate, Danny Jordaan, was optimistic, confident and bolstered by the spirit of the party in the region, he said yesterday.

Meanwhile, the main opponent in the region, the DA, was confident it had done enough to win the hotly-contested metro in Wednesday’s elections.

Jordaan said the spirit of the ANC was in the townships and people were happy again.
