President Jacob Zuma says violent protests are undermining the freedom and democracy for which many people fought and died for.

He told the crowd gathered to celebrate Freedom Day at the Giyani Stadium in Limpopo yesterday that our freedom was not free.

Zuma said freedom was fought for and many lives were lost for its attainment, adding "We therefore have the collective responsibility to defend it as South Africans with the same vigour as when we fought for it."

He called on people to stop actions that undermined freedom, such as engaging in violence, referring to the recent outbreak of violence at KwaSithebe, in KwaZulu-Natal, which had resulted in widespread damage to property and led to the shutting down of business premises in the area.

The Economic Freedom Fighters (or EFF), which launches its local government elections manifesto on Saturday at Orlando Stadium, used Freedom Day to warn of “erosions” of rights in South Africa.

The party’s national spokesperson, Mbuyiseni Ndlozi said it was a fact that when the government killed people in Marikana, Mothutlung, Relela and in many other protests across the country it was in violation of their right to life and protest.

He said any government in the world, even if voted by the majority, was illegitimate if it could kill its own people with impunity.

The EFF said “the government of the day” was also eroding the fundamental ideal of the rule of law, which was premised on the fact that all shall be equal before the law.

The government has thanked South Africans for "keeping democracy vibrant", saying the patriotism displayed on Freedom Day was "inspirational".

The country celebrated 22 years of democracy yesterday.

It said the demonstration of active citizenship and patriotism displayed by countless South Africans was truly inspirational.

Government Communication and Information Services acting director-general Donald Liphoko said the 2016 celebration of Freedom Day was another positive milestone in the country’s democratic history.
