Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe and his wife Grace begin a two-day state visit to South Africa on Wednesday, the first since 1994, to help efforts to industrialise his country's ailing economy.

He is expected to meet President Jacob Zuma for talks and the signing of a memorandum of understanding. This will be followed by a courtesy visit to Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa. On Thursday, business delegations from both countries will meet for talks.

International Relations and Cooperation Minister Maite-Nkoana Mashabane said South Africa and Zimbabwe already had strong bilateral ties and that the meeting was intended to "coordinate economic development-related projects".

Nkoana-Mashabane said that since Mugabe was currently chairperson both of the Southern African Development Community and the African Union, South Africa would use the opportunity to discuss peace and stability on the African continent.

Kenyan university students marched in the capital on Tuesday to demand more security from the government. This came after gunmen killed nearly 150 people at a campus in the eastern town of Garissa last week.

Gunmen from the al Qaeda-aligned group killed 148 people on Thursday when they stormed the Garissa University College campus, some 200 km from the Somali border.

On Tuesday, hundreds of students from different universities walked through the streets in the city singing and shouting, and some headed to the office of the president where they presented a petition.

Kenya has struggled to stop the flow of militants and weapons across its porous 700-km border with Somalia, and the violence has also damaged the economy by scaring away tourists and investors.

The strike at Medupi power station is expected to resume on Wednesday. The decision came after unions representing affected workers met on Tuesday after the Easter break and decided to down tools.

The National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (or Numsa) announced that its workers would join others in strike action on March 25 to highlight their plight or grievances.

Eskom spokesperson Khulu Phasiwe warned that if any staff member who was disciplined repeats the offence, they would face dismissal.

He noted, however, that the strike would not affect the synchronisation of unit 6, which is currently pushing 400 megawatts of electricity into the already constrained power grid.
