EFF unhappy about 'bogus' media briefing

And, DA wants answers on senior Sars official's ''mystery' deposits

If government officials make promises to students, they should do so knowing how much is budgeted for the purpose, Zulu monarch King Goodwill Zwelithini has said following last week's violent student protests in KwaZulu-Natal.

The protests at the University of KwaZulu-Natal, where the academic programme was suspended until September 20, left the law library and other buildings torched.

Zwelithini was addressing more than 30 000 young women and dignitaries gathered at the 2016 Umkhosi woMhlanga at eNyongeni Royal Palace in Nongoma on Saturday.

"I also ask [government] that when you have not fulfilled your promises, go back to communities and inform people what happened and ask for more patience, because making promises . . . and not fulfilling them is one of the reasons why people are burning infrastructure like universities."

To vice chancellors, Zwelithini said his door was open if they needed him to intervene.

The Economic Freedom Fighters on Sunday expressed its disappointment and concern about a "bogus media briefing" held in Durban.

EFF acting national spokesperson Fana Mokoena said the briefing was held by former leaders of the party in KwaZulu-Natal and was allegedly attended by fewer than 20 people.

"It is not necessary to mention from the outset that this bogus press conference was outside the mandate of the organisation and is therefore not recognised by the EFF – [it was] a policy conference at which no policy was discussed," Mokoena said in a statement.

This came just days after the party decided to dissolve its leadership structures in KwaZulu-Natal and the Eastern Cape in the hopes of electing new people in an attempt to improve its performance during the 2019 national elections.

The structures are to be replaced by interim structures which rebuild branches and convene regional assemblies.

Following the "bogus" briefing in eThekwini, the party said that ill-disciplined members should not expect a response from the EFF.

Democratic Alliance MP David Maynier has said the party will submit a parliamentary question to get more information on a reported probe into alleged ''suspicious'' payments to a South African Revenue Services officer, following a report in the Sunday Times.

He said the allegations were not new and had been raised with Sars commissioner Tom Moyane during a Standing Committee on Finance meeting in Parliament on 23 August this year.

''When questioned about the investigation, Tom Moyane was evasive and simply stated that he would not 'comment on current ongoing investigations'.

''The burning questions in this case are: whether Tom Moyane acted on the recommendations of the preliminary report and requested an investigation into the allegations surrounding “suspicious and unusual payments”; and if an investigation is being conducted, why Jonas Makwakwa has not been suspended, pending the outcome of the investigation, from SARS?'' said Maynier.

The Sunday Times reported that Makwakwa was being investigated for R1.2-million in deposits between 2010 and January 2016. Three payments totalling R450 200 to his girlfriend, reportedly also a SARS employee, were also being probed.
