President Jacob Zuma's office has refused to confirm or deny claims of an imminent Cabinet reshuffle.

The Sunday Times reported that Zuma was planning to restructure his Cabinet after the African National Congress's birthday celebrations in January 2017 in an attempt to sideline his opponents.

It claimed that he had already been in consultation with provincial leaders over plans to remove Limpopo Premier Stanley Mathabatha, and the Eastern Cape's Phumulo Masualle.

The Sunday newspaper reported that some in The Presidency had already been instructed to profile ANC leaders earmarked for Cabinet appointments in order to avoid appointing those without a public profile.

Democratic Alliance leader Mmusi Maimane says Public Protector Advocate Busisiwe Mkhwebane confirmed to him she had referred the ‘State of capture’ report to the National Prosecuting Authority and the Directorate of Priority Crime Investigation.

She said this was done in line with the remedial action required by the report compiled by her predecessor Advocate Thuli Madonsela.

Madonsela in her remedial action noted that the Public Protector Act called for both the NPA and the Hawks to be called in on matters where it appeared that crimes had been committed.

The report looks into complaints of alleged improper and unethical conduct by the president relating to an improper relationship with the Gupta family, which has been described as close friends of the president. There were also allegations of the family being involved in key decisions, including the removal and appointment of ministers and directors in State-owned enterprises.

A “fierce” and “robust” African National Congress national executive committee meeting over the weekend had to be extended as it could not agree on holding a secret vote for President Jacob Zuma to step down.

The meeting which was due to end yesterday has been extended to Monday.

However, ANC spokesperson Zizi Kodwa said the extension was due to a number of items on the agenda which still needed to be discussed.

Earlier, City Press reported that Tourism Minister Derek Hanekom had shocked the party when he tabled a motion for a vote for Zuma to step down on Saturday.

The NEC is the only body with powers to recall the party president in between its conferences. The elective conference is scheduled for December 2017.
