Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga has instructed her legal team to sue Vytjie Mentor for defamation following a Facebook post alleging that her department had lost R42-billion in one financial year.

In her post, Mentor apparently uploaded a picture of students sitting at desks outside a classroom, with a caption, "R42-billion missing in one financial year and Matriculants in Eastern Cape writing exams out in the open in November 2016. No classes, but Minister's child aged 22 drives a Lamborghini."

The application by the Helen Suzman Foundation and Freedom Under Law to force President Jacob Zuma to suspend public prosecutions boss Shaun Abrahams and establish an inquiry into his fitness to hold office has been struck off the roll with costs for lack of urgency.

"Relief is only granted in special circumstances when the case for such relief is made out," said Gauteng Judge President Dunstin Mlambo at the North Gauteng High Court in Pretoria.

The court took issue with the speed at which the applicants made the application, with Mlambo saying it demonstrated the mindset of the applicants.

Mineral Resources Minister Mosebenzi Zwane must go, labour federation Cosatu has said.

Cosatu slated Zwane for allegedly sowing division and failing to lead.

General secretary Bheki Ntshalintshali told the media yesterday that Zwane was a weak and polarising figure that had failed to deal with the biggest issues, like retrenchments, illegal mining and ongoing violence.

The federation held its central executive committee meeting from Monday to Wednesday where it concluded that it had no confidence in the minister.

Ntshalintshali said if Zwane didn’t step down he should be dismissed.
