Oscar Pistorius to be sentenced for murder
Zimbabwe doctors, teachers strike over unpaid wages as economy deteriorates

Oscar Pistorius is expected to hear his sentence for murdering Reeva Steenkamp when he appears in the High Court in Pretoria today.

His disability and the year he has already spent in jail would be among the factors Judge Thokozile Masipa could use to justify deviating from the minimum of 15 years for murder, a lawyer not involved in the case said on Tuesday.

On December 3 last year, the Supreme Court of Appeal ordered that the former paralympic athlete be sentenced afresh, after it overturned Masipa's finding that he was guilty of culpable homicide. It replaced her verdict with one of murder.

During sentencing proceedings in June, prosecutor Gerrie Nel asked Masipa to send Pistorius to jail for a minimum of 15 years as he intentionally killed Steenkamp.

He said Pistorius had still not shown remorse for murdering the model and law graduate on February 14, 2013. He had failed to take the court into his confidence and reveal his reasons for firing the four shots that killed her. Instead he gave an interview to broadcaster ITV. Nel said this was disrespectful to the court and to the Steenkamps.

Teachers, doctors and nurses in Zimbabwe began a strike over unpaid salaries on Tuesday, a day after police used force against protesting taxi drivers in the capital, Harare, as the country's economy deteriorates.

Zimbabwe is battling its worst drought in a quarter of a century, while the economy is beset by cash shortages, prompting small, spontaneous protests over the past month. Monday's protests were the first to turn violent since 2005.

President Robert Mugabe has used the police to keep a lid on the protests, but Amnesty International said their response on Monday amounted to a violation of Zimbabweans' human rights.

Police deployed again on Tuesday in two of the townships that saw violence on Monday, but the situation was calmer. Police spokesperson Charity Charamba said law enforcement agents were on high alert and had arrested 95 people over Monday's violence.

The South African Broadcasting Corporation on Tuesday evening reacted to a media briefing by African National Congress spokesperson Jackson Mthembu saying it was "concerned" by some of the things Mthembu said.

In a statement by SABC spokesperson Kaizer Kganyago, the SABC stated that it never said it was policy not to show violent protests.

According to the SABC, the decision was an editorial one and not a change in policy. Kganyago added that the Broadcasting Complaints Commission of South Africa's code of conduct played a role in the decision – specifically the BCCSA's clause regarding violence and hate speech.

The chairperson of the SABC board, Prof Mbulaheni Maguvhe said that SABC COO Hlaudi Motsoeneng should not be seen as the only person making decisions.
