The DA Caucus in the City of Tshwane congratulates Executive Mayor Randall Williams and MMC for Utilities Cllr Daryl Johnston on the newly-launched upgraded Bronkhorstspruit substation to improve power stability for businesses and residents.

Earlier today the City of Tshwane officially launched the newly refurbished and upgraded Bronkhorstspruit substation. The substation underwent an extensive scope of work to upgrade its capacity from 20 MVA to 80 MVA at a cost of R96 million, fully funded by the City.

The City undertook the project to address the growing need of increased power capacity in Region 7. The project scope of work included the following:

• Construct an additional substation building to accommodate one stage of 11 kV switchgear panels; and modify the existing building to accommodate the new 11 kV switchgear panels;

• Replace all existing 11 kV switchgear panels, 132 kV control and protection panels, batteries and charges;

• Supply and install three 40 MVA power transformers; and

• Supply and install new single cables between the transformers and incomer panels.

Impressively, the project was finished on time in a period of three years. The work started in April 2019 and was completed earlier in April this year. The team speedily completed its work despite challenges and delays brought about by Covid-19 regulations.

With the upgrades and refurbishment, the substation is in good condition with modern technology. Furthermore, the upgrades will ensure that the City has the capacity to accommodate new applications for connections in Region 7, which will unlock economic and development opportunities around Bronkhorstspruit and surrounding areas.

The City is due to complete upgrades to several more substations. We are truly committed to maintaining and refurbishing all critical infrastructure.
