The Democratic Alliance (DA) will dedicate itself to ensuring Parliament becomes a centre of excellence that holds the executive to account, the party's Parliamentary leader Athol Trollip said on Wednesday.

"By providing oversight over the executive and by providing alternative policies, Parliament will once again start fulfilling its constitutional obligations," Trollip said in Cape Town at the release of the party's Programme of Action for Parliament.

The DA aimed to revitalise Parliamentary Committees by presenting a series of policy alternatives and by using mechanisms such as private members' legislation to introduce those alternatives into the legislative process.

"We will monitor new legislation introduced to Parliament and focus particularly on those bills which we believe run contrary to the best interests of all South Africans," Trollip said.

"We will strive to ensure that, at all times, those issues of concern to the electorate are debated in Parliament."

The DA would also aim to ensure that Parliament was properly managed, that the Speaker was neutral and that the programming committees focused on issues of national importance.
