The DA congratulates all Olympians and Paralympians on their call up to represent our nation in the world’s most compelling and excellence-driven sporting tournament. We know they will do themselves and all South Africans proud.

We want to make special mention of Oscar Pistorius, who we believe to be an embodiment of the spirit of the Olympic Games.

Oscar’s selection to represent team South Africa in both the Paralympics and the Olympics serves as an inspiration to all South Africans. His inclusion in the Olympic team has been called the culmination of a five-year process since the 2007 IAAF decision disallowed him to compete. It is, however, more truthfully viewed as a giant step in a life-long journey of sacrifice and dedication.

The Olympic Games celebrates the spirit of sportsmanship and has been a medium to spread the message of unity and peace. Oscar’s achievement serves as a timely reminder of how, through strength in spirit and determination, we have the ability to create opportunities and reach heights limited only by our imagination.

We wish Oscar and our other athletes the best of luck in their final preparation. We look forward to seeing them in London in the green and gold.
