I have received confirmation that the investigation into Schabir Shaik’s alleged breach of the Companies Act will be carried out by the SAPS Commercial Crimes Unit at Johannesburg Central Police Station, and that the investigation has received case number CAS-2730/3/2011.

On Monday, I laid charges against Mr Shaik at Johannesburg Central, after the Sunday Times revealed that he continues to hold a directorship in a company.

Mr Shaik needs to take responsibility for his apparent failure to comply with the legislation. If Mr Shaik instructed his auditors to engage with Cipro on this matter, as he suggests in this morning’s Beeld, then it is his responsibility to follow the matter up, and ensure that his auditors have carried out his request. Cipro say they have not been engaged by Mr Shaik’s auditors; if this is the case, then Mr Shaik is every bit responsible for his breach of this legislation.
