Reports that the former Ministers of Public Works and Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Gwen Mahlangu-Nkabinde and Sicelo Shiceka, are still members of parliament are cause for concern.

Both Mahlangu-Nkabinde and Shiceka lost their cabinet positions after being implicated in wrong-doing by Public Protector Thuli Madonsela. In abusing their power, they broke the trust of the South African people and the oath they took on assuming office.

I will therefore today be writing to the Chief Whip of the ANC Caucus, Matole Motshekga, to determine what disciplinary action will be taken against them.

Should the ANC caucus leadership fail to impose any sanction, it will directly undermine the principles of accountability and transparency that all members of parliament are supposed to protect and promote.
