The Democratic Alliance (DA) welcomes the 12i Income Tax Allowance Incentive announced this morning by Minister of Trade and Industry Rob Davies. We agree with the Minister that such an incentive will help to boost the large-scale manufacturing sector, both in terms of capital investment and with assistance for training of employees in the sector. It will help to get South Africa working again.
We call on the Minister to adopt a similarly brave approach to tax incentives targeted at assisting small and medium businesses. Only by making it cheaper and easier for South Africans to start small businesses - and for small business owners to hire more employees - will we ever be able to create jobs for 4,3 million unemployed South Africans. As a first step Minister Davies should publicly lend his support to Treasury's youth wage subsidy proposal to help drive it through the ideological log-jam that Cosatu has created through their opposition to the plan.
