The Democratic Alliance (DA) welcome’s the South African government’s and the African Union’s (AU) recognition of the National Transitional Council (NTC) as the legitimate government of Libya. We have been calling for President Zuma to do this for some time now.

President Zuma had previously refused to recognise the NTC, ostensibly because the AU refused to do so as well. Meanwhile, dozens of other countries around the world, including Botswana, recognised the NTC weeks ago and have built up cordial relations with it. South Africa – with our proud history of fighting for democracy – should have been leading the charge.

The NTC has pledged its commitment to the AU and the African continent, to unifying all the people of the country, and to protecting all foreign workers within Libya, including African migrant workers. These commitments augur well for the country as it seeks to rebuild itself after the traumas of civil strife and 42 years of dictatorship.

The DA reiterates its support for the NTC and looks forward to a mutually beneficial relationship between South Africa and Libya.
