Government’s annual Management Performance Assessment Tool (MPAT) has for the second year running found that the DA-run Western Cape government is the best managed government in South Africa.
The report annually measures the performance of each provincial and national department and then aggregates scores per province and at national level.
The Western Cape scored best in each of the report’s 4 key performance areas:
- Strategic Management;
- Governance and accountability;
- Human resource and systems management; and
- Financial management.
- The report was tabled and presented to the Portfolio Committees on Public Service and Administration and Performance Monitoring and Evaluation.
The North West Province ranked last, and Mpumalanga and Free State dropped by 5 positions.
The nine provinces and national government ranked as follows:
- Western Cape
- Limpopo
- National government
- Gauteng
- Northern Cape
- Eastern Cape
- Mpumalanga
- KwaZulu-Natal
- Free State
- North West
The DA in the Western Cape has systematically implemented good governance practices to ensure an efficient and professional public service in the places where we govern.
We have learnt from this process that excellence in service delivery can only be achieved when the right management practices are in place.
If governments do not hold public servants to account, manage money professionally and promote general good governance principles, they can’t roll out effective basic service delivery.
We congratulate the Western Cape government on this excellent achievement.
