In an election, everyone’s voice should be heard. Everyone who wants to make their mark to decide how their city or municipality will be governed should be counted. The right to vote is not only a privilege we fought for. It is also a duty for responsible citizens who care about how their area is run and want a real stake in government.
That right should not be limited just because people cannot go to the polling stations on voting day because they are sick or cannot get to the relevant place on 18 May.
These Local Government elections, the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) is giving everyone the opportunity to exercise their right to vote. These elections, every person who wants to can be part of the decision of who their next local government over the next five years will be.
The DA will help everybody who wishes to apply for a special vote get access to the forms and assist them with completing them. We will also be available to deliver the forms to the IEC offices.
According to IEC regulations, to qualify for a special vote, you must be registered to vote and in possession of a green bar-coded ID book or a valid temporary identity certificate.
For assistance in applying for a special vote, you can call the DA. Our number is 0861 CALL DA (0861 2255 32). When you call, please make sure that you have all your details ready so that operators can help you as quickly as possible.
Our operators can send you the forms via email, or you can arrange for a DA representative to deliver them to your home.
When you have completed the form, your DA representative will drop it off at the nearest IEC office or you can drop it off yourself.
All applications for a special vote must be submitted to the IEC by 17h00 on 3 May.
Those people who have been granted special votes will be able to cast their vote on 16 or 17 May at their home with an IEC official present. Ballot papers will be placed in a sealed and unmarked envelope to guarantee voter secrecy.
We have done much in Cape Town over the past five years in partnership with the voters. We can still do so much more to build on our relationship with the voters and build the city that we all deserve.
But building the open, opportunity society for all in Cape Town will require every DA voter to come out and vote on election day. It will also require that everyone who is eligible to make a special vote does so. Every last vote is needed and the DA is ready to assist people to make sure that they can continue to be part of the solution.
With your help, we can continue to build the opportunity city of jobs and growth where everyone feels safe and respected. We can continue to build a city that includes everyone and cares for all its citizens. And we can continue to build a city that is efficient and works for all of the people all of the time.
Every vote counts. No one should feel that they are excluded from this election or that their vote doesn’t really matter in the bigger picture. Every person is part of the bigger picture.
If you need help casting your special vote, let us know and the DA will help you make your voice heard. So please, lend us your vote and vote DA.
