The Democratic Alliance (DA) applauds the interim SABC board's decision this afternoon to take criminal action against SABC employees and former staff after a report by the Auditor-General's office unmasked extreme levels of organisational rot within the SABC, contributing to their current financial mess. The announcement this afternoon by the SABC's interim chairwoman Irene Charnley to act on all of the A-G's findings is welcome news and might finally be a step towards financial prudence and accountability at the public broadcaster. For too long, the SABC and its ANC patrons have gotten away with a lack of governance and oversight, which has led to waste and utter mismanagement at the SABC. It is time to set things straight at the broadcaster and to bring back fiscal discipline, strong and honest leadership, and a culture of responsibility and integrity. The DA will continue to monitor the situation to ensure that those responsible for wasting hundreds of millions of taxpayer's money are brought to book.
