The Democratic Alliance (DA) welcomes the decision by South African Airways (SAA) to no longer exclude people from its pilot training programme on the basis of race or gender.

On Friday, I expressed concerns over SAA’s cadet selection policy and its potential for sowing divisions amongst South Africans. I also said that I would be writing a letter to the CEO of SAA, Ms Sizakele Mzimela to request a meeting to discuss the matter.

SAA are to be commended for their swift response to the public outcry last week following the national air-carrier’s admission that it would be excluding certain candidates based on race.

We remain concerned however that SAA have simply undertaken a face-saving exercise in response to the PR disaster.

I will still be requesting a meeting with Ms Mzimela to ensure that SAA’s actions going forward are sincere and come with a commitment to put in place appropriate selection processes.

The DA continues to support the notion of an open opportunity society as part of our commitment to building a diverse and inclusive economy.
