A reply to a Democratic Alliance (DA) parliamentary question has revealed that last year, the Department of Rural Development and Land Reform purchased four luxury Audi Q7s at a total cost of about 2.4 million rand, or R600 000 each. (see reply below)

The purpose of the purchase of the vehicles is apparently for the "...logistical support in the execution of duty and service delivery, including but not limited to project management, planning, restitution, land reform, land tenure and all administrative and financial support services."

The reply indicates that between 2006 and 2007 pick-up trucks not costing more than R150 000 each were purchased for this specific purpose. It is rather baffling why the Department would then see fit to purchase four luxury vehicles at a cost of nearly R2.4-million, when cheaper options are available.

The Department can ill-afford to waste money on extravagance as it is currently facing a payment backlog of over R6-billion in outstanding land claims. 90% Of land transferred to land beneficiaries have failed and over R70-billion is required to complete the land restitution purpose.

The DA's wasteful expenditure monitor has reached over R1-billion in just over a year. It is a clear indication of just how little regard the ANC-government has for funds intended for service delivery to the public. R1-billion could have been used to build 1 851 RDP houses and undoubtedly would have contributed significantly towards the eradication of the massive land claims backlog.
