I believe that a “scam” is being run with the recently introduced parking attendant system in Johannesburg. A growing number of people are receiving fines for not paying the required parking fees. However, no parking attendants are present to receive payment from motorists after parking their vehicles.
Clearly the JMPD (Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department) have caught onto the fact that this is an easy and lucrative cash cow. I personally received a fine and have already paid for it. My concern however is that motorists are not given an opportunity to pay when leaving their vehicles on the spot. Upon returning to one’s car a fine is left on the vehicle’s windscreen, as was my experience.
Johannesburg should take a leaf out of the City of Cape Town that ensures that every opportunity is given for the motorist to pay. Motorists in Cape Town often pay upon returning to their vehicle.
I’ve asked my colleagues in Johannesburg and the Province to look into this matter.
