In a replyto my parliamentary question, President Jacob Zuma has failed to provide me with a full commitment that the final, unexpurgated report of the Marikana Commission of Inquiry will be made public.

This is not only worrying insofar as ensuring that all South Africans who were shocked by this tragedy, especially the families of the mineworkers and police officers who lost their lives, are able to find out every detail of what happened that day, but it may create the perception that the President might opt to conceal certain findings of the report, particularly if the evidence is damning against his own government.

I will write to President Zuma and urge him to provide South Africans with an unconditional commitment that the full, unexpurgated report will be made public. While the President must respect the recommendations of the commission, it is essential that there is an unwavering commitment to ensuring that every detail of what happened at Marikana is made public to all South Africans.

Anything less is a smack in the face of the victims, their families, and the very constitutional values which were so fundamentally violated on the day of the tragedy.
