The Democratic Alliance (DA) does not accept Police Minister Nathi Mthethwa’s announcement in Parliament today that controversial crime intelligence head Richard Mdluli has been "shifted' from his position to another division to be decided by police management is enough to allay concerns about his suitability to hold any senior position in the South African Police Service.
Today I announced the DA’s comprehensive strategy to deal with the Mdluli saga in Parliament and called on President Zuma to re-suspend Mdluli with immediate effect. There remain serious allegations against him, and numerous questions remain as to the circumstances surrounding his reinstatement in the first instance. This ‘shifting’ of Mdluli to another part of the SAPS does not address these problems.
All of the available evidence suggests that Richard Mdluli is not fit to serve in any part of the Police Service or criminal justice system.
President Zuma must re-suspend Richard Mdluli with immediate effect. Anything less is unacceptable.
