The Democratic Alliance (DA) shall be requesting that the Minister of Correctional Services, Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula, appear before Parliament to explain why the National Commissioner of Correctional Services, Tom Moyane, is being paid a salary above the level agreed to by cabinet.
The Sunday Independent reports today that the Mr. Moyane is being paid R 1 462 980, which is more than R160,000 over and above the amount agreed to by the cabinet.
The Minister appear to be acting outside of her authority. As a cabinet Minister, it is her duty to enforce cabinet decisions and respect the authority of the executive. She has for some reason chosen to defy that principle. If the minister has defied a decision made by the president sitting with the cabinet, then it implies that the minister has defied the president. The minister is not a law unto herself and needs to be held accountable before the portfolio committee on correctional services.
