The DA in Gauteng has received information alleging the physical abuse of a learner at Brakpan Primary School.
The parents of the learner contacted me and allege their son was thrown against a wall and hit over the knuckles with a paint brush by a teacher at the school.
Teachers have to adhere to the disciplinary procedures set out in the Code of Conduct and cannot be a law unto themselves and act out against learners. Teachers who are found administering corporal punishment must be brought to book. The South African Schools Act prohibits the use of corporal punishment.
I have written to Gauteng Education MEC Barbara Creecy, requesting an urgent investigation of these allegations.
Earlier this year at Dawnview secondary school in Germiston a learner committed suicide allegedly because of a teacher’s behaviour towards the learner. The DA is still waiting for a reply from MEC Creecy in this regard.
