Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga must answer to the workbook shortages experienced in Gauteng.
Education MEC Barbara Creecy in a statement to the Gauteng Provincial Legislature today indicated that workbooks are part of a national programme and the responsibility of the Department of Basic Education (DBE). Workbooks are designed, printed and delivered by the DBE, with the provincial education department merely fulfilling a monitoring role.
I will ask DA Shadow Minister of Basic Education Annette Lovemore MP to submit questions to the Minister in the National Assembly regarding problems experienced with workbooks in Gauteng. The Minister must also answer to the state of readiness for workbook design, printing and delivery for the next school year.
The DA previously reported that Edenglen Primary School in Ekurhuleni has not received all the required workbooks for the second half of this year. This school also only received workbooks for the first half of this year in May.
While we accept that workbooks are the responsibility of the Minister, it is unfortunate that the MEC dodged her own duties until now in terms of ensuring that delivery actually takes place across the province. Instead it was up to the DA to raise the red flag about workbooks in the province.
The lacklustre efforts by the provincial and national department to ensure that all schools have the essential workbooks will impact negatively on learners’ studies and results. It is unacceptable that students do not have the necessary study materials this far into the academic year.
Minister Motshekga must give the learners and parents of Gauteng the answers they deserve.
