The DA Youth reiterates its call for suspended Athletics South Africa president Leonard Chuene to resign from his position, and for those politicians who continue to offer their support to Chuene to withdraw it immediately. Political parties should be united in their call for Chuene to step down. If they were, it would be untenable for Chuene to continue in his present position. But he has so far resisted from stepping down, and that probably has a lot to do with the fact that a sizeable part of the ANC, including elements of the portfolio committee on sport, and the ANC Youth League leadership, continue to offer Chuene their tacit backing. That has to stop. In particular it is shocking that the ANC Youth League continues to support Leonard Chuene. They should be ashamed of themselves. But Julius Malema has offered Chuene his fullest support throughout this saga. He said that Chuene should have continued to lie ("He should've continued to say ‘I don't know about the test'") and has labelled calls for Chuene to resign as "opportunistic". We also know that Chuene consulted Malema for advice. In short, it's support from people like Malema that continues to prop Chuene up, and although the ASA boss is now suspended by SASCOC, it is notable that now, nearly two months after we knew for certain that Chuene lied to South Africans, he still continues to draw a salary from ASA. Apparently Malema refused to answer a Times journalist's questions about Chuene last week. Presumably, as with the nationalisation of the mines, he's now been told by the ANC that he's actually embarrassing them and needs to stop talking. But until he actually renounces Chuene, and apologises, we will know that the Youth League is still offering them support. And that is disgraceful. As with the Eskom fiasco this last week, the ANC Youth League always takes the knee-jerk reaction of trying to read race into something, and then deciding who to support based on that. In the case of Semenya, they offered Chuene their support because they automatically thought that there was some imperialist conspiracy involving the IAAF. Actually, it turns out, both parties were guilty of doing a lot wrong, but the ANCYL can't see that because they can't take off the racial blinkers.
