The DA in Gauteng applauds Gauteng Education MEC Barbara Creecy’s action to get an urgent court interdict preventing the South African Democratic Teachers Union (SADTU) from disrupting schooling in Ekurhuleni today. The interdict is a victory for learners of the East Rand school as education is the key to securing their future.

The department needs to take a stand against SADTU to show that it is in charge of the education system in this province. The DA visited Daveyton schools this morning to assess whether SADTU ignored the interdict today, but we were pleased that there was no disruption.

It is irresponsible for union members to disrupt schooling to raise its concerns with the Department. What is worse is that the planned disruption would have had an impact on learner performance as many schools fail to complete the entire curriculum.

The union should respect due process and if one of its members is found guilty, necessary action must be taken. The DA is urging the MEC to be decisive and not be intimidated by union members. Mismanagement and maladministration characterise many poorly performing schools in Gauteng. This must be attended to urgently.

The ‘no work, no pay rule’ must be applied for those who ignore the court interdict. The DA believes curriculum management and monitoring are needed to counter truancy amongst educators, who are not using their time for teaching.
